Most popular and beautiful Sarees in India

A woman looks her best when she is wearing a Saree. It is one of the most beautiful dresses and may be the only one-piece dress in the whole world. This Indian dress is not only a favourite in India but has attracted foreign women too. The best thing is it can be worn by women of any age and there are a variety of sarees suited for every woman. Only the fabrics, colours or patterns change but saree is an evergreen favourite.


Traditional sarees are always a favourite and every Indian woman will have at least one saree in her wardrobe. Indian women wear saree for auspicious occasions like wedding. There are different types of sarees and here are some of the most popular varieties of sarees.

Silk Sarees: This might be the most popular variety of saree. It has different names, ‘pattu’ in South, ‘paat’ in east and ‘resham’ in hindi. It is famous all around the world for the design, colors, embroidery etc. It is mostly used for special occasions like weddings or festivals. The famous ones are Kanchipuram Silk Sarees, Bhagalpur Silk Sarees, Mysore Silk Sarees etc. These have different varieties like Pure silk, raw silk, printed silk, embroidery silk etc.

Banarasi Saree is extremely beautiful and made in the holy town of Banaras or Varanasi. It is one of the finest with heavy golden works or silver brocade or embroidery works or zari works. They are traditional and used for auspicious occasions.

Chanderi Sari: Chanderi is another beautiful type of saree which is made as a blend of silk and cotton. It is light weight, so easy to wear and is a great choice of saree. The name is from Chanderi, a small town in Madhya Pradesh. The brocades and muslin in Chanderi are famous. The chanderi cotton and chanderi silk are famous.

Tant Saree: Tant Saree or Bengali Sarees come from West Bengal and come in a variety of vibrant colours. They are easy to carry about and suits any occasion. They are light, transparent and great in comfort. They come in many colours, designs and styles. They can be worn as formal or casual wear. So it’s a different saree and a favourite for Bengali Women.

 Sambalpuri Sarees belongs to Orissa and is made using hand loom. They are made from Taussor silk and also soft cotton and they are called Ikat and shadhi in local language. The unstitched fabric might be as long as 9 metres and can be wrapped in different styles. Sambalpuri Sarees were made from the place called Sambalpur in Orissa.



Kosa Saree is a royal saree and is a special kind of silk in different colours, designs and patterns. The price of each saree will depend on how pure is the silk and its handwork.
Nauvari Saree is a traditional saree from the state of Maharashtra. It is nine yards long and is worn by Marwari women. There is a unique way of wearing the saree.

Chiffon Saree is elegant and is trendy.  It comes in many colours, embroidery and is made from fiber and cotton silk. It is good for party wear.

Georgette Sarees is affordable and is available easily. They come in many shades and with ornamental work. They are easy to handle, wash and easy to wear. The prints are great and has many varieties like Jaal embroidered Georgette, Pure Georgette and Designer Georgette.

Net Sarees are made from soft or hard net and is for those who like glamorous sarees. It is a modern saree.
Bandhani Saree which is the traditional bandhej saree is a type of designing pattern by tie and dye. They are popular in Rajasthan and Gujarat and come in many colours and variety and price range. Jaipur is famous for Bandhej , Lehariya and Garchola Sarees.
